How to use it
- Enter the destination URL, source, medium and campaign name.
- Optionally add term and content to distinguish audiences or creative.
- Generate and copy the encoded URL, then test it before launching the campaign.
Method and formula
The builder adds utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign as required query parameters. utm_term and utm_content are optional. Values are URL-encoded, and normalization can convert spaces to underscores and text to lowercase.
Worked example
For an email newsletter promoting a spring launch, use source=newsletter, medium=email and campaign=spring_launch. Use content=hero_button to distinguish that link from a footer link.
Limitations
- UTM parameters describe traffic; they do not guarantee that an analytics platform records the visit.
- Avoid personal data, email addresses or confidential names in UTM values because URLs may be logged and shared.
- Agree on naming rules before launch—Newsletter and newsletter may appear as separate values in reports.
